Abstract:

Asking him to convey his gratitude to Lord Bathhurst for "this intended & unsolicited kindness to a perfect stranger;" enclosing stanzas for The Guardian which Wordsworth has sent to him "to be inserted or cast aside, he cares not which. The thought is good, striking & original, but the movement of the verse is to my ear unpleasant & the expression is sometimes forced & awkward. Such as it is, however, I send it;" discussing the state of politics and government in general and Owen and the Lanark experiment in particular; saying "Owen has wrecked himself upon the shallows where I told him he would strike, & endeavoured vainly to direct him in a safer course."
