Margaret Hughes lived in France during World War II and volunteered to help French prisoners of war held in Meaux. She was decorated three times by the French Government for her service to the country and wrote "Les Lauriers sont Coupés" about her experiences during the war.
Gielgud would star with John Mills in "Veterans" at the Royal Court Theatre in London in 1972.

Abstract:

Concerning the sale of her house and his recent work in California; expressing his disappointment that he will no longer be able to visit her "...at your adorable house...I hope your nice secretary is still with you - he always makes one so welcome and I am sure his help must be invaluable. I am just back from California, where I worked for three weeks on a stupid 'private eye' film to make some money. The subsidized theaters here only pay one a nominal salary and one has to do odd TV and films when possible in order to pay the butcher and the baker!...I have a Shakespearian programme for children in America which I do with Sir Ralph and Lynn Redgrave next week - then Christmas - which I have - and in January I begin rehearsing a very amusing (I think) comedy with John Mills as co-star. We tour for a month, then play six-weeks at the Royal Court, a small theater where we originally launched 'Home' - and in April I hope we may bring it to the West End. Perhaps New York after the summer."
