Abstract:

Sending the first number of his novel Hypatia, and discussing its publication. Asking for the proofs "as soon as possible," noting "I cannot tell what the style looks like, unless I see it in print." Discussing a recent cookery article in Fraser's Magazine, hoping it is not by Mrs. Meredith, as the author has included "a great deal of bosh about the Greeks" and has confessed to reading Petronius, "[which] no decent woman [should] touch with a pair of tongs." Noting "It is all hypocrisy to talk of Petronius & yet be ashamed to confess to Fanny Hill or Harriet Wilson, [who] are chaste & clean compared with him."
