Abstract:

Ann Rivers Siddons, a contemporary Southern woman writer, uses the theme of awakening in her novels to exhibit the quest for individuality that many women embark upon. In four of her novels -- Heartbreak Hotel, Homeplace, Outer Banks and Hill towns -- Siddons explores the lives of four female characters who experience an awakening and attempt to find true identity. An examination of the novels previously listed reveals how the author utilizes the theme of awakening in her writing. Being from the South, Siddons's novels focus upon southern women who must battle traditional values and outside opposition in order to experience an awakening.
