Abstract:

The papers of the interrelated Barker-Edes-Noyes families of Pembroke, Boston, and Charlestown, Mass. consist of correspondence, business and military papers, financial records, genealogical material, diaries, account books, ships' logs, and estate and legal papers. The personal and family papers make up the bulk of the collection and include correspondence of surveyor, engineer, and agent of the Warren and Charles Bridges Ebenezer Barker, his wife Sarah (Fuller) Barker, and their sons Edward Tobey Barker, who served on the U.S. gunboat Huron and on the steamer Mercedita during the Civil War, and Frederick Alden Barker who served in the Charlestown Cadets while living in Charlestown and working in Boston. A group of letters written by Edward Tobey Barker to his mother, Sarah, gives an account of his activities and includes first-hand accounts of the blockade of Charleston, S.C. and the events preceding the Battle of Mobile Bay. Also included are business papers related to Josiah Barker's shipbuilding business including repairs made to the USS Consitution at Charlestown Navy Yard. Other materials include diaries of Sophie Briggs Edes and Ellen Waldo; account books of Kingston, Mass. physician Jabez Fuller; genealogical files of James Atkins Noyes and Robert T. Edes relating to the Alden, Barker, Burnham, Edes, Fuller, Hatch, Loring, and Noyes families; Pembroke and Boston deeds from the 17th and 18th centuries; and Edward Barker's copy of the log of the gunboat Huron. Also included are papers related to Judah Alden and Josiah Barker's involvement with the Society of the Cincinnati and Revolutionary War claims and letters written to Seth Barker, captain of the ship Volunteer.
