Abstract:

The Barrows Dunham Collection was assembled by Fred Zimring in order to document the trial and dismissal of Temple Univ. philosophy professor, Barrows Dunham, for his refusal to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC). The collection includes the oral interviews of 70 individuals (tapes & transcripts), FBI case files, correspondence, notes, clippings, magazine articles, newsletters, and lectures. The collection contains secondary source materials about the Pennsylvania Loyalty Act of 1951 and general issues surrounding academic freedom during the McCarthy era, as well as the hearing transcripts for the University Loyalty Committee.

Prominent individuals interviewed include Claude C. Bowman, Sylvia Crane, Sam Darcy Adams, Alice Dunham, Sigmund Diamond, Millard E. Gladfelter, Lee Lorch, William W. Tomlinson, and Saul Waldbaum. The collection also includes files documenting correspondence with the U.S. Dept. of Labor and the American Assoc. of Univ. Professors. There is a small group of materials associated with a case involving employment discrimination of the handicapped articulated by Zimring.
