Abstract:
A selection of letters sent to Goldhagen by German readers of his book "Hitler's Willing Executioners" (including Germans now living abroad, among them Jews and other victims of Nazism). Some express gratitude and support for his findings, others are critical. Antisemitic or neo-Nazi letters are not included. In his reply (pp. 217-251), Goldhagen observes that the evidence is against those of his correspondents who generalize from the fact that they themselves did not encounter antisemitism before and during the Nazi period, or that they themselves did not know about the Holocaust. He contends that he did not impute guilt to all Germans, but to a great majority, and argues that participation in the genocide was, in most cases, due not to blind obedience or terrorization but to convinced antisemitism. Goldhagen asserts that his book was intended as an analysis of facts, not a moral judgment. He deplores the difficulties of contemporary Germans in dealing with the Holocaust, and welcomes the open debate set off by his book.
