Abstract:

" ... In the present book five British and five Dutch historians study the relationship between a metropolis and its dependencies in the modern history of their countries. Two authors investigate the role of London in the development of the British economy and the British way of life. Two others analyse aspects of Scottish and Irish relations with England. One paper is concerned with the influence exercised in the eighteenth century on the House of Commons by 'country' attitudes. Apart from a paper on a striking example of provincial influence on Dutch civilisation generally ... the Dutch contributors have sought to write a short history of the changing significance of the Outer Provinces in a country dominated by Holland, the real 'metropolis. ..."--Jacket.
