Abstract:
A study of the fascist paramilitary group Acción Revolucionaria Mexicanista known as the Camisas Doradas (Golden Shirts). During the rule of Lázaro Cárdenas (1934-40), the group was especially active. They extorted money from Jews and perpetrated acts of violence against them, including riots in the streets and destruction of property. In 1939, together with army officials, they called on the populace to exterminate the 30,000 Jews living in the country. The Jews reacted with protests in the newspapers, demonstrations, and creation of committees. Discusses the connections between the Camisas Doradas and the German Nazi party. The Camisas Doradas were not successful in their attempts to topple the government of Cárdenas. After 1941, when Mexico supported the U.S. in World War II, the group's activities gradually petered out.
