This book, the fruit of the analytical work of a dozen international specialists, based on numerous and often unpublished sources, is the first monograph to be dedicated to him. How does this stranger, the son of a Parisian tailor, find himself at twenty-two a geographer to the king and tutor to the young Louis XV? It is this extraordinary journey that the authors of this book retrace, reconstructing the network that he was able to create while ensuring the protection of the Dukes of Orleans over three generations and the interest of the Portuguese crown. Over the course of the chapters D\'Anville\'s impressive intellectual ability is revealed, one able to satisfy the requirements of his patrons without betraying his sources, maintaining his scholarly integrity despite the pressure of diplomatic issues. Without leaving his Parisian cabinet, by the only exercise of a sharp criticism and a systematic crossing of the sources (old texts, stories of voyage, astronomical measurements, oral information ...), Anville remodels the contours of the ancient and modern worlds, with an accuracy that will be validated by field measurements a posteriori. This book paints a nuanced portrait of a cabinet geographer in the Age of Enlightenment. Leaning behind the scholar\'s shoulder, the reader discovers how he elaborates very early a rigorous methodology of work, builds his career, builds one of the largest collections of maps of the Eighteenth century, and influences to this day the representation of the world and its borders.--Voltaire Foundation." ;
schema:description "Véritable \'Strabon français\' pour ses contemporains, Jean-Baptiste d\'Anville est considéré comme l\'un des plus grands géographes des Lumières.
