Abstract:

Outlines the Nazi anti-Jewish policies in the Polish Generalgouvernement in 1939-42, focusing on the district of Radom. Dwells on the ghettos established in this area (e.g. in Kielce, Radom, Częstochowa) and the mass deportations of Jews from the region in 1942 (mainly to Treblinka). Relates the Nazi persecution of Poles who helped Jewish fugitives. In December 1942 and January 1943, a company of the German gendarmerie stationed in Ciepielów carried out a mass murder operation in the villages of Ciepielów Stary, Rekówka, Świesielice, and Zajączków aimed at Polish families that had given aid to Jews. A total of 38 people, mostly children, were murdered. The punitive action was carried out on the background of the Nazi "pacification" campaign: there were partisan activities in the area. Notes, in particular, the Jewish partisan unit headed by Chil Brawerman and Stanisław Olczyk "Garbaty", which was controlled by the communist Gwardia Ludowa.
