Abstract:

Among the various ideas submitted, that of a Cézanne watercolor exhibition proved to be the most appealing because of the intrinsic beauty of these works; in addition, only one exhibition as comprehensive as this has ever been held--and that almost two generations ago--and such a project therefore promised results of exceptional scholarly interest as well. Despite the vast art historical literature on Cézanne, his watercolors have not been given the attention they deserve. -- Preface.
