Abstract:

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the challenges and successes of Latino monolingual foster parents who had been providing a home to foster children in the child welfare system in Ventura County. Interviews, using an interview protocol developed by the researcher, were conducted with 14 monolingual Latino foster parents. The findings revealed that in regard to challenges, 71.4% reported language barriers and in regard to the most rewarding aspects of being a foster parent, 50.0% expressed a sense of altruism and 35.7% reported a sense of self-satisfaction in caring for foster children. Also, 85.7% stressed the importance of providing training in Spanish. Overall, foster parents did not express many concerns and felt supported by the social workers and the agency in general. More research is needed to determine the challenges these foster parents experience due to the lack of training provided in Spanish.
