Abstract:

Traces Jewish athletes' battles against antisemitism from the first Olympic games in Athens in 1896 to the present. The athletes, in line with the Zionist enterprise, had to combat the stereotype that they were physically degenerate and unsuitable for sports. Focuses on the lives and accomplishments of the most representative Jewish champions of each period. Men like the Hungarian Alfred Hajos (born Arnold Guttmann), the first modern Olympic swimming champion, proved, from 1896 on, that Jews can reach top performances in sports. Discusses the Olympic games in Berlin in 1936 as a battle between Hitler and Jewish champions, especially the German-born Helene Mayer, on whom America hinged its participation. Argues that Hitler gained the final victory, since he was able to turn the games into a manifestation of German strength. Discusses the fate of French Jewish champions Victor Young Perez and Alfred Nakache in Auschwitz. In the Olympic games in Munich in 1972, the Israeli delegation was massacred by a commando of the PLO. Recently, Arab athletes have refused to compete with Israelis. Pp. 139-176 include a dictionary of Jewish athletes.
