Abstract:

In 2008, the Retention of Women in Private Practice Working Group of The Law Society of Upper Canada ("the Law Society") conducted a series of consultations to better understand movements within the legal profession in Ontario among women. The Final Consultation Report of the Working Group put forth a series of recommendations to promote the advancement of women in the private practice of law. In order to better understand and begin benchmarking movements and changes within the legal profession among women, The Law Society commissioned The Strategic Counsel ("TSC") to undertake an annual study among lawyers who file a change of status. In 2013, three waves of research data (2010-2012) have been combined in order to inform the Society about gender-related trends in the profession in addition to informing the development of initiatives to support and retain women and men in the profession.
