Abstract:
All kinds of organisms must reproduce in order to replace individuals that die of one cause or another and to allow evolution to occur. Since some offspring will be unable to reproduce themselves because of predation or lack of resources, successful species produce more than one offspring for each parent. In some species (e.g., humans), adults produce only a few offspring and invest their resources promoting the success of each of them. In other species (e.g., pine trees and salmon), adults invest their resources in producing thousands of offspring, most of which are destined to die before themselves reproducing. In
