The political monopoly of the LCY was in reality undermined in the first half of the 1980s as the result of economic and political crisis and greater openness of the media. Consequently, two new participants entered Yugoslav politics: (1) various groups of intellectuals, critical of the elite; and (2) spontaneously emergent groups within the population. Both of them centered on Serbia: the former in Belgrade, the latter in Kosovo. By 1986, the elite found itself under heavy pressure from both the critical intelligentsia and popular protests.
