Barnes has written a biography of a minor member of the Knickerbocker group of authors flourishing in the nineteenth century. Hoffman's novels, A Winter in the West, and Greyslaer: a romance of the Mohawk, brought him considerable literary attention, and his career was brought to an untimely close by his mental collapse. The appendix contains excerpts from Hoffman's correspondence and uncollected poems.

Abstract:

Barnes has written a biography of a minor member of the Knickerbocker group of authors flourishing in the nineteenth century. Hoffman's novels, A Winter in the West, and Greyslaer: a romance of the Mohawk, brought him considerable literary attention, and his career was brought to an untimely close by his mental collapse. The appendix contains excerpts from Hoffman's correspondence and uncollected poems.
