Notes: Bathymetric chart with relief by soundings and hachures.
Bass discovered Phillip Island in 1798, and noted 'a high cape like a snapper's head'; this was also remarked by Grant in Lady Nelson, 1801. Thus the early name 'Snapper Island' (but also Grant Island on charts of 1840s).
Barralier shows 'Snapper Hd.' [Cape Wollamai] opposite 'Bass Pt.' [between to-day's Davis and Griffith Pt.]. "Woolamai" was the local Aboriginal name for snapper.
Barrallier drew [French Island] without the north coastline; its land mass is somewhat confusingly lettered 'Western Port'. The island was later named after an 1802 French scientific expedition.
Outside the neatline are short trajectories of rhumblines which, if drawn, would meet in centre of chart.
Small island above Scrub Pt. was named after Barrallier; oddly, on later sailing charts it is written as "Brilla" [1867] or "Barriliar" [1869].
Mitchell copy has a ms. addition of the north coastline of French Island and what are now Sawtells Inlet and the Inlets.
