Abstract:

Translation from Greek of the Chronicle by Constantinus Manasses, with 19 insertions on Bulgarian medieval history and a separate section on the Trojan War. Lacking the title page and the first 63 verses of the Chronicle. Very richly ornamented with 69 polychrome miniatures, some illustrating the Chronicle and the Trojan War, some with Bulgarian themes. Two artists ornamented the manuscript. The first artist made use of a Greek original and painted the initial 24 scenes and the last one; the second artist painted the rest. On leaf 1b, Ivan Alexander is represented full face and in his full stature in center, with Christ on his right and Constantinus Manasses on his left. The Patriarch of Turnovo is depicted on leaf 2a.
