Abstract:

The other Hollywood commemorates the birth of an art that would transform the 20th century. This stylish and historical documentary focuses on the early days of the movie industry and the enormous contribution made to this industry by Europe. Included is rarely seen footage from early movies and interviews with some of the film industry's pioneers. Part I highlights the world's first public presentation of films in Paris, the comedies by Max Linder, Able Gance's "Jaccuse" and the onset of World War I. Part II includes "Ingeborg Holm" by Victor Sjostrom and Greta Garbo's star-making performance on "Gosta Berling's Saga". Part III features "Battleship Potemkin" by Sergei Eisenstein, "Metropolis" by Fritz Lang, "Joyless Street" starring Greta Garbo, "The White Hell of Pitz Palu" featuring Leni Riefenstahl and Louise Brooks becomes a star in "Pandora's Box". Part IV highlights Abel Gance's masterpiece, "Napoleon". Part V explores the early career of Alfred Hitchock. Part VI focuses on the arrival of sound films, "The Jazz Singer" and the onslaught of World War II.
