Abstract:
An investigation of the political evolution of the three writers and thinkers - Mircea Eliade, Emil Cioran, and Eugène Ionesco, especially in Romania in the 1930s. Based on archival material and their writings in the Romanian press, as well as their political involvement, discusses Eliade's and Cioran's close relationship with the fascist Iron Guard, particularly under the influence of their professor and spiritual guide, Nae Ionescu. Analyzes their antisemitic writings in the same period, and their admiration for the Nazi regime and its ideology. Unlike Cioran and Eliade, Ionesco was a strong opponent of the Romanian fascist movement. His silence concerning the fascist and antisemitic past of Eliade and Cioran is explained by his acceptance of a diplomatic post in the Romanian embassy in Vichy France during the Antonescu regime. Notes that Eliade, who later became a well-known American scholar, adopted in exile a strategy of "oblivion" and "camouflage" concerning his extremist and antisemitic attitudes, without expressing any remorse.
