Abstract:
The present volume is the product of a conference on the "City as a Centre of Change in Asia," which was convened at the University of Hong Kong in 1969. The conference sought mainly to explore the range and dimensions of urban problems in Asia and to consider the relevance of the Hong Kong experience in dealing with such problems. In bringing together planners and scholars from a number of Asian countries as well as from the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, the conference served a useful purpose in facilitating an exchange of views. But, as is so often the case with published versions of conference proceedings, this collection of 20 papers does not, unfortunately, convey the impression that the conference stimulated much original thinking on many of the crucial issues associated with urbanization problems in Asia. This is especially disappointing in light of the editor's obvious awareness of and sensitivity to many important theoretical questions which were presumably raised in the conference discussions but which were inadequately considered in the prepared papers. -- from http://www.jstor.org (March 20, 2014).
