Abstract:
Correspondence, diaries, weather maps, weather synopses and probabilities, and other papers relating to Abbe's career with the Weather Service of the U.S. Army Signal Corps and the U.S. Weather Bureau. Documents his participation in the West African Eclipse Expedition (1880s). Also includes Abbe family genealogical material and correspondence with family members particularly his brother, Robert Abbe; correspondence with Benjamin Apthorp Gould whom Cleveland Abbe assisted in the telegraphic longitude work of the U.S. Coast Survey at Cambridge, Mass.; correspondence with Otto Struve, former director of the Glavnai︠a︡ astronomicheskai︠a︡ observatorii︠a︡, Pulkovo, Russia, where Abbe was a guest astronomer (1865-1866); and Civil War letters (1863 March 4-May 25) to Abbe from Albert S. Bickmore, 44th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, U.S. Army, written while on special duty as a nurse in Beaufort, N.C. Other correspondents include James H.
