Abstract:

Miscellaneous family papers; Civil War letters of Capt. John Badger Colding, C.S.A., chiefly to his father, Charles H. Colding, and sister, Elizabeth Smith-Warner; biographical sketch of Miss Laura Stoney Darlington (1871-1917); genealogical correspondence re the Colding, Conyers, Faust, Gore, Humphreys, Poore, and Swain families; and photographic images of family members, including Thomas Blanchard Colding, Blanche C.B. Colding, Charles Henry Colding, Sr., Charles Henry Colding, Jr., Elizabeth Humphries Colding, and C.S. Warner.

Includes photocopies and typescripts of Civil War letters of Capt. John Badger Colding, 21 Nov. 1861-29 May 1863. A graduate of The Citadel, Charleston, S.C., Colding was attached to the 60th Georgia Regiment; letters predating 13 July 1862 originate from Camps Calhoun and Skidaway, Isle of Hope, and other coastal Georgia or South Carolina locations; subsequent letters were written from various locations in Virginia. Colding was killed in action at Winchester, Va., 13 June 1863.

Colding's letters include: 29 Mar. 1862, re his disdain for those who had volunteered as six-month troops under command of Ga. governor Joseph E. Brown as opposed to Confederate troops who had volunteered for duration of war; 17 Apr. 1862, re bombardment and surrender of Ft. Pulaski; 13 July 1862, re last engagement of the Seven Days battle; and 29 May 1863, re his impressions of Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, both of whom Colding had seen prior to the battle in which Jackson had died; letters, 5 July-25 Aug. 1863, concern the wounding, death, and burial of John B. Colding.
