Abstract:

Photographs and other visual materials related to and collected by members of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts. Most of the photographers are unidentified, and many of the photographs are copy photographs. The bulk of the collection consists of portraits, including oversize, of portraits of various members of the Channing, Crowninshield, and Endicott families, as well as of various American public figures; many are unidentified. There are also views and architectural studies of various places in Europe and the United States, including snapshot photographs of Boston, Mass. taken ca. 1900; photographic reproductions of portrait paintings, political cartoons, and plans and maps of Washington, D.C. and other cities; mounted Underwood & Underwood news photographs of major events of the early 20th century, taken ca. 1919-1935; documentary photographs taken by Margaret Bourke-White and Berenice Abbott; and loose photographs and one volume of snapshots of an unidentified family at their farm near Pennesseewasee Lake in Maine, taken ca. 1898-1904. A second volume contains portraits and autographs of members of the Colonial Society. The collection also contains illustrated journals dating from 1895 and 1955. Includes cartes de visite, film transparencies, chromolithographs, photomechanical prints, glass plate negatives, and lantern slides.
