Abstract:
The number of degrees of freedom to be controlled in an Adaptive Optics (AO) system is evolving from a few hundreds on the current telescopes to several thousands foreseen on the coming extremely large telescopes with diameters of order 30 to 100 meters. The control strategies should be adapted both to comply with the new performance criteria and to enable real-time estimation of such a large number of parameters. First, I demonstrate the quantitative improvement of the estimation, a factor of 2 on error variance, available when inserting priors about turbulence statistics, even with a fast algorithm designed for large systems. Next, the optimisation of a closed-loop criterion leads to an optimal law with an internal model control, which can be applied in real time thanks to the same fast algorithm.
