Abstract:

Manuscript, in multiple hands, of a collection of about 35 verses, riddles, and prose pieces by various authors. Poems include On the Death of the Princess Charlotte; The Negro's Complaint by William Cowper; War Poem by Robert Southey; and numerous selections from James Hervey's Meditations; as well as a lighthearted piece titled "The Card Club, a Tale Dedicated & Addressed to that Honourable Society." Prose pieces include a diary excerpt recording the routine events of a woman's day, purported to be "a part of that journal of the celebrated Elizabeth Woodville, previous to her marriage with Lord Grey ... This was extracted from an ancient manuscript preserved in Drummond Castle;" a letter consoling the recipient for the loss of her brother; and an excerpt from the Spectator. The volume also contains a page of riddles and a parodic dinner menu which includes "The Divine Part of Man Fried."
