Abstract:

Abstract: Residential settings of elderly persons can vary depending upon their health status. This study aims to compare reasons reported by seniors when presenting at emergency departments (ED) to the residential setting to determine whether residential setting is predictive of those reasons. The literature suggests that elderly persons living in private residences are more likely to utilize the ED due to injuries such as falls, also that the elderly who live in nursing homes are more likely to utilize the ED for conditions of stroke, congestive heart failure (CHF), or renal failure. Data from the 2009 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) were analyzed to ascertain the predictive relationship between residential setting and ED utilization. Analysis showed injuries were more likely to occur in nursing homes than in private residences and separately, no statistical bias exists toward nursing home residents for presenting at the ED for stroke, CHF, or renal failure. Practical implications and future initiatives are proposed.
