Abstract:

Information professionals should be able to take a proactive role as a strategic partner in their organization's competitive intelligence. Their role needs to focus on the "outside-in" approach, based on their organization's strategic needs and objectives. Competitive Intelligence for Information Professionals explores the role of strategic information and intelligence in organizations, and assesses the values and needs of intelligence in organizations. The book provides guidance on how to work strategically with competitive intelligence, methods for monitoring and analysis and a process-oriented approach. Chapters include discussions on how news monitoring and competitive intelligence interact and how this offers opportunities for cooperation between different departments. Cases from the authors' own experiences when working with competitive intelligence in international corporations are also included. Key Points Competitive intelligence (CI) is a new area for information professionals, Offers perspectives on a new trend within the library and information sector, Provides a comprehensive approach to CI Charlotte Hakansson is the owner of Novolentia, a firm working with competitive intelligence. She also works as Team Leader for research support at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Library. Charlotte has eighteen years of experience of working within information management, competitive intelligence and project management in the pharmaceutical industry in Denmark. Together with Margareta Nelke she developed and lectured a business intelligence course at the Royal School of Library and Information Science in Copenhagen, Denmark. From 2006 to 2009 she was the President of the Southern Chapter of the Swedish Association for Information Specialists. Margareta Nelke is an information consultant and has thirty years of experience of working with knowledge management and competitive intelligence in Swedish corporations and in her own firm, I.C. at Once. She is the author of journal articles and books in Swedish and English on knowledge management, business development and competitive intelligence and has lectured at several conferences and seminars in Sweden and abroad. Margareta was previously the manager of Tetra Pak's Technology Intelligence department and director of Tetra Pak's global technology intelligence process. From 2006 to 2009 she was the President of the Swedish Association for Information Specialists and in 2002 she was awarded the Special Libraries Association's European Chapter award "European Special Librarian of the Year 2002".
