Abstract:

Out of the darksome hills -- and into the world! "Hither came Conan the Cimmerian... black-haired... sullen-eyed... sword in hand... a thief... a reaver... a slayer... with gigantic melancholies... and gigantic mirth... to tread the jeweled thrones of the earth... under his sandaled feet." So begins the legend of Conan, as relayed by Kurt Busiek, the award-winning writer of Marvels, Avengers and Astro City -- inspired by the timeless stories and characters of author Robert E. Howard. From the barbarian's birth on the battlefield to his coming of age during the Battle of Venarium, witness the making of a fantasy icon. And with some sixteen summers behind him, Conan leaves the dark, forest-locked reaches of his native land and seeks out new adventures wherever he can find them! First, he journeys north to Asgard, land of the Aesir -- and into the middle of their war with the Vanir. The land he seeks lies farther still: Hyperborea, fabled land of plenty. But will newfound allies aid him in his quest or lead him to ruin? Will he be beguiled by the Frost Giant's daughter? And if he ever reaches his destination, is it truly the unrivaled paradise he has been led to believe? Conan's epic travels will continue in Nemedia, where he will clash blades with Janissa the Widowmaker and first attract the attentions of the dark sorcerer Thoth-Amon. In the shadow-haunted cities of Zamora, he will learn the skills of thievery -- and he will put them to the test in the Tower of the Elephant. Along the way, he will face terrors unknown -- and temptations irresistible. And wherever he goes, his legend only grows. But just as one great hero rises, so too does an unspeakable evil. Discover the horrifying origin of Conan's bitter adversary in the Book of Thoth!
