Abstract:

Memoirs of a Jew born in 1927 in Łódź, to an assimilated Jewish family, as Józef Fajwiszys. During the war he was an inmate of the Warsaw ghetto and a member of a resistance group, from which he was expelled for lack of discipline. During a deportation to Treblinka, Kutrzeba managed to escape from the train, and wandered about or was hidden by Polish peasants and clergymen. While in hiding in the village of Piekuty Nowe in Eastern Poland, he was baptized and changed his family name to that of a famous Polish general. Provided with Polish Catholic documents, he enlisted voluntarily for labor in Germany. Notes the antisemitism of fellow Polish workers. In 1945 he escaped from the forced labor and was liberated by the Americans in Erfurt. From 1952 on, Kutrzeba lived in the USA; he remained a Catholic.
