Abstract:

As distributed computing is used in application in which the distributed tasks are highly interrelated and change dramatically, coordination becomes increasingly important and difficult. This book introduces partial global planning as a new approach to coordination. This approach provides a unified and versatile framework for coordinating independent nodes, viewing control as a planning task. Nodes build and revise tentative plans about both local and network problem solving; knowledge-based reasoning about coordination is an integral part of a node's local decision making. This will be a valuable aid for researchers in understanding the issues in network coordination for distributed problem solving systems.
