Abstract:
Series I. Seventeen letters to Andre Barbier, Georges Charpentier, Frantz Jourdain and several unidentified correspondents concerning publications, the business of the Academie Goncourt and personal matters. Notable are a letter to another journalist giving advice about the placement of articles; one using the sickness of a friend's child as a pretext to comment on his own physical and psychological health; several postcards and a letter of 1923 from Brittany evoking the landscape in detail for an artist friend and including sketches for paintings Geffroy is planning to execute. The letters make mention in passing of Rodin, Daudet, Clemenceau, Anquetin, Raffaelli, Maurice Hamel, Zola, Rosny and Ceard.
Series II. Fifty-eight letters received: Correspondents include Antoine Bourdelle, Pierre Bracquemond, Henri Caruchet, Armand Dayot, Mme. Fantin-Latour, Felix Feneon, Fermin Gemier, John Grand-Carteret, Ludovic Halevy, Albert Lebourg, Auguste Lepere, Charles Morice, Raffaelli, Georges Renard, J.H. Rosny, and Daniel Vierge. Of particular interest are letters from Bourdelle discussing the symbolism of his monument "la guerre" (1902) and commissions for public sculpture in Brittany (1920); a long letter of 1922 from Dayot about projected articles for "L'Art et les Artistes" in which he identifies artists he considers commercially viable subjects; a letter of 1904 from Mme Fantin-Latour correcting factual errors in an article by Geffroy about her husband's work; eight letters (1884-1899) from Feneon addressing mutual journalistic concerns, with comment on an exhibition of Maximilien Luce and an endorsement of Jean Peske (1899); thirteen letters (1904-1905, 1913) from Gemier enlisting support for the "Syndicat des artistes" and commenting on Geffroy's project for a "Musee du soir"; letters from Grand-Carteret about an international exhibition of postcards (1903), cultural exchanges with Germany (1912), and the "iconography" of the Goncourts (1922); a note from Morice praising Geffroy's criticism (n.d.); a request from Raffaelli for a review of his exhibition of color engraving (1904); and four detailed letters (1904-1918).
From Georges Renard about common friends in the art and literary worlds.
Series III. Manuscripts: These comprise a pre-publication manuscript, with some significant corrections, of Geffroy's article for "L'Art d'Aujourd'hui" on Cezanne's 1895 exhibition at the Vollard gallery; a draft, with minor corrections, of the catalogue essay of 1890 for Raffaelli's exhibition at the Goupil gallery, Paris, bound with a printed copy of the catalogue; a short note written for a newspaper on the occasion of Gauguin's death (1903); and drafts of articles on Andre Barbier (4pp.), and on the vernissage of the Salon of 1924 (2pp.).
Series IV. Printed matter: A folder of newspaper clippings of reviews of Geffroy's work and articles about his career. Includes an appreciation by the Mayor of Morlaix written on the occasion of the dedication of the "salle Geffroy" in the local museum (1927).
