Abstract:

The bulk of the correspondence is with his wife and deals with his service, 1863-1865, in the Confederate Army. Especially interesting are descriptions of the evacuations of Charleston and Columbia; an account of the retreat of Hardee's army to North Carolina; the high morale of the Confederate troops; Sherman's manner of waging war and his generous surrender terms; running the northern blockade into Charleston, 1862; and a trip to Lake City, Fl., 1864.

The collection also contains a description of the battle of Stono Ferry in 1779; letters of Feilden and his wife Julia McCord Feilden, Sussex, England, to Louisa McCord, Charleston, S.C., discussing family matters, the Civil War and World War I; and an unidentified photograph of cavalrymen, ca. 1898?
