Abstract:

Cowboy Memories of Montana is Mark Perrault's exhaustive personal recollection of a boyhood spent on his grandfather's ranch. Perrault's narrative relives the rhythms of cattle ranching from the isolated months of a Montana winter to the verdant pastures of summer when grasses grew high enough to brush the underside of horse. Perrault seems to have come of age with ranching, and his reminiscences brings a world to life that is as brilliant in its retelling as it must have been when the author first noted the summer sun rising behind the mountains. The passage of time is marked by technological advances in ranching and cattle breeding, and memories are all that remain of a time of simple beauty and awesome challenge.
