Abstract:

The Human Genome Project was an international consortium started in 1990 to sequence DNA. Part-way through, a private company owned by J. Craig Venter, Celera, announced it would finish the job in less time. Francis Collins, leader of the publicly-funded effort, and MIT's Eric Lander, were among this group of scientists who produced historical results which laid the foundation for medical breakthroughs and predicting diseases such as Alzheimer's, cancer and arthritis.
