Abstract:

Abstract: The purpose of this project was to write a grant to fund Familias Unidos, a program designed to enhance cultural competence and promote relationships connecting Spanish and English speaking families at Flowery Elementary School, a dual immersion (Spanish and English) program, located in the city of Sonoma, California. The literature review described the benefits of and barriers to cross-cultural parent involvement in dual immersion programs, the importance of promoting cultural competence, and theoretical frameworks for increasing parent involvement. The Community Foundation of Sonoma County was selected as the potential funder. The goal of the Familias Unidos program is to enhance cultural competence and promote relationships connecting monolingual Spanish and English speaking families by providing opportunities to build relationships and create a sense of community. The actual submission and/or funding of this grant was not a requirement for the successful completion of this project.
