Abstract:

Correspondence, addresses, photographs, and other papers, documenting McColl's nineteen years in both houses of the state legislature (S.C. House of Representatives, 1903-1910, and S.C. Senate, 1918-1930), and his career as legal counsel for the Bank of Marlboro, Atlantic Coast Line Railroad Co., and Bennettsville and Cheraw Railroad Co.

Consisting of 5,080 items and 24 volumes: letters re McColl's interest in civic improvements, including construction of school at Marlboro Cotton Mill, 1913; road improvements; and establishment of speed limit for automobiles, 1914; correspondence with the Carnegie Library Fund, New York, giving figures describing Marlboro County and its residents.

Correspondents include Christie Benet, David R. Coker, James Lide Coker, John Gary Evans, Mendel L. Smith, and Benjamin R. Tillman; includes documents, 1811-1813, re land transactions in Marlborough District, S.C.; sermons, 1877-1891, of the Rev. J[ohn] A[lexander] W[illiam] Thomas (1822-1896); undated manuscript, "The Colored Race in Marlboro"; photographs, 1913, of scenes in Cuba and Panama.
