Title and woodcuts within ornamental borders; D. Zenaro's device on t.-p.; italic type.
The woodcuts after the designs of C. Vecellio are by "Cristoforo Guerra, tedesco, da Norimberga" who very probably is identical with Christoph Chrieger. cf. p. 155 and 200, and Thieme-Becker, vol. VI (1912) p. 533. In the 3d edition (1664) the designs are ascribed to the "Gran Titiano"; the participation of Titian is, however, questionable.
Bound in white vellum, gilt.

"First edition of the foremost early treatise on costume--the first to comment on contemporary manners and dress--written and illustrated by the Venetian painter Cesare Vecellio, nephew and pupil of Titian. It contains 418 full-page woodcuts depicting a vast array of [ancient and Renaissance] European and Asian costumes. ...
