Abstract:

Unsigned, undated French ms. textbook of natural philosophy, probably from the second half of the 18th century.

The text deals principally with mathematics and physics, subdividing these two branches of learning into chapters on arithmetic; ratios, proportion, and progressions; algebra; geometry; trigonometry; and conic sections. The section on physical sciences is divided into chapters on motion, astronomy, geology, geography, and the properties of matter. The author has also included sections on the elements of water, air, earth, fire, and on magnets and electricity. He begins by defining each branch of knowledge, and then presents the theories and experiments of important scientists within those fields, as well as problems, solutions, diagrams, and illustrations. He refers to theories of Ptolemy, Copernicus, Descartes, and Newton, and mentions Otto van Guericke's "Magdeburg experiments" concerning atmospheric pressure, and Charles-François Du Fay's advances in the field of electricity. The brief chapter on geography (leaves [209]-[210]) describes the division of the American continent, and includes a list of important cities, such as Québec, Boston, Philadelphia, New Orleans, and Santa Fe in North America; and Cartagena, Buenos Aires, Lima, and Santiago ("S. Jago") in South America.
