Abstract:
School program files include correspondence, notes, mailing lists, proposals and grants, contracts, publicity, budgets and background information that document the work of the department of education with individuals in the Houston area and beyond.
Of particular note is the documentation on the MFAH collaboration with Jack Yates Senior High School, one of the museum's most successful education initiatives to date. Since its start in 1995, high school students from the Yates Magnet School photography program have photographed Houston's Third Ward. Under the direction of seasoned photographer and Yates communications teacher Ray Carrington, students document the cultural fabric of this historic community by walking through the neighborhoods capturing candid images of day-to-day life. Each year, museum staff select the best photographs for display in an exhibition that highlights the artistic talent of these young people.
