Abstract:

Describes the consecutive steps in the liquidation of the Łódź ghetto. In June-July 1944, 7,196 Jews were sent to Chełmno; in August 67,000 Jews were deported to Auschwitz. In October ca. 600 Jews who had important functions in the ghetto, and their families, were sent to Sachsenhausen and Ravensbrück. 800 Jews remained in the ghetto for various types of work and they survived. Ca. 33% of the Jews sent to Auschwitz were not killed immediately; they remained there for a while and were later sent to other concentration camps. More than 3,000 Jews from Łódź were registered in Auschwitz and worked in labor camps. There was also a group of "transit" Jews, whose fate was not decided upon their arrival at Auschwitz. Reconstitutes the fate of some of the Jews who were sent from Auschwitz to various labor camps, on the basis of remaining partial lists compiled by the prisoners and by the Nazis, as well as of testimonies, documents from the trials, etc. Pp. 129-169 contain fragmentary lists of Jews killed immediately after their arrival at Auschwitz, registered Jews, and "transit" Jews. Pp. 171-326 contain documents in Polish and German (with Polish translation) concerning the Łódź ghetto and the deportations.
