Abstract:

The desert adventures of an old prospector and his "family" of animals - four burros, a rooster, and a part-coyote dog.

"All animals trusted old Dan, and counted on his kindness and understanding. He was sympathetic even with attacking beasts, knowing that they too had a right to survive. Dan had no human family, but had gathered around him a household of creatures--a goat, a bantam rooster, and three burros--each with a distinct personality. They kept him company as he wandered about in the desert in a quaintly furnished wagon, gathering odd bits of desert treasure -- interesting bleached bones, pieces of ancient Indian pottery, and the like -- to sell to collectors. The newest member of the company when this story beings is Nina, a half-grown burro whom Dan rescues from coyotes that have killed her mother. Nina responds at once to Dan's affectionate care, and soon becomes a good desert traveler, enduring the discomforts of sandstorm and drought as patiently as the rest of Dan's 'family.' But even Dan cannot cure her terror of coyotes until another of his adopted orphans shows the way. Dan's life is not rich in material possessions. But there is no lack of the riches that are important to him: friendship with people of all ages whose trails cross his own in the desert; the confidence of his animal companions; the spacious beauty of his surroundings, and the daily excitement of being with nature in all her moods."
