Notes: George Bruce was a St Andrews builder whose family was responsible for making, in 1893, the breakwater that became the Bruce Embankment. Among Bruce's other books were "Wrecks and Reminiscences of St Andrews Bay" (1884) and "The Land Birds in and around St Andrews" (1895).
Works contains 40 plates (out of 41 listed - 'The Storm' listed against p. 53 seems to have been omitted by the binder from the whole edition), six are collotypes ("the new calotype process" mentioned on the title page), two of them portraits (the Tom Morrises, and a frontispiece of the author, pen in hand), the rest are views of St Andrews. The photographer, Thomas Rodger (1832-1883), was a pupil of John Adamson.
