Abstract:

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between patients who have utilized the Emergency Department (ED) two or more times in one year and their age, payment source specifically Medicaid, and urgency of their visit. Data from the 2007 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS) survey was used to analyze and predict the relationship between ED overutilization and patient's age, payment source, and immediacy of care. Hypothesis 1 stated age would be associated with patients who present to the ED two or more times. Hypothesis 2 was that the payment source, specifically Medicaid, would be associated with patients who present to the ED two or more times. Hypothesis 3 stated that immediacy of care, summarized by five levels with one meaning urgent, would be associated with patients who present to the ED two or more times. The results showed none of the hypotheses were supported.
