Abstract:

Among elite athletes, gastrointestinal issues are the most prevalent in the endurance athlete population (Rehrer,1992). This is primarily due to the sheer volume of training necessary to maintain optimum body composition and induce the metabolic and physiological adaptations for competition (Russell, 2013). The downfall of such long and intense training sessions are weakened recovery mechanisms due to chronic inflammation, poor energy availability, and gastrointestinal distress. Evidence-based recommendations for meeting macronutrient and hydration goals to provide net energy balance and euhydration are rarely consolidated. In addition, there currently are no protocols in place for probiotic supplementation to manage gastrointestinal distress despite advances in probiotic research in endurance athletes.

The goal of this project is to generate an all-encompassing performance nutrition guide for endurance athletes at the UCLA Athletics Department. This tool will be the first of its kind in any collegiate program to include a probiotic supplementation protocol, as well as recommendations for compliance testing.

This tool is designed to provide a Sports Dietitian with evidence-based fueling recommendations that can be passed on and taught to endurance athletes to optimize health and performance.
