Abstract:

Pp. 7-72 trace the fate of the Gurfinkiel family in the Shoah. Gurfinkiel's half-brother, Charles, born in Paris in 1933, was caught with his mother, who was not Michel's mother, in the Vel d'Hiv roundup and deported to Auschwitz, where they were gassed upon arrival. Gurfinkiel's father, Szyja, was interned in Pithiviers in 1941 and deported to Auschwitz in 1942. He survived Auschwitz and the death march to Ebensee, and returned to Paris after the liberation. He married Laja, who gave birth to Michel in 1948. In the 1980s Szyja told Michel about his experiences in Auschwitz. Gurfinkiel's mother and her two sons from a previous marriage had also survived the Shoah. They hid during the Vel d'Hiv roundup and then found shelter in la Mayenne. Pp. 75-165 discuss Holocaust education and memory in France. Gurfinkiel reflects on his ambivalence regarding a French project, intitiated by President Nicolas Sarkozy in 2008, to have the French of today adopt the 11,000 Jewish children who were deported from France during the Shoah and killed, like Michel's half-brother Charles.
