Abstract:

This is Dimitrie Cantemir's eye-witness account of social and cultural life in the Ottoman empire at the end of the XVIIth- beginning of the XVIIIth centuries, all fragments reproduce the notes that accompany the narration of military and political events. In his notes, Cantemir registered personal observations and reflections made during his stay in Constantinople or in other parts of the empire; other comments are drawn from his experience during his education in Moldavia and his tenure of its throne in 1710-1711.
