Abstract:

Dirleton Plantation journal kept by or for James Ritchie Sparkman and possibly by a member of the Upton family.

Includes lists (1859-1864) of Darleton slaves with birth and death dates, and those in the "Birdfield [Plantation] Gang" and from the estate of Dr. Edward T. Heriot. A "List of Field Hands on Dirleton" (1859 February 12) includes carpenters and house workers. Other lists include the amount of cloth given for "Women & Children," clothing and measurements (1859-1864), and a "List of blankets give out at Dirleton after coming into possession [of] J.R. Sparkman" (1859 Nov.).

Accounts (1864-1866) for personal and plantation expenses are with B.M. Grier, J.R. Sparkman., Eliza S. Heriot, Dr. R.S. Heriot, A.G. & M.E. Heriot (Northampton Plantation), and G.A. Thorne (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Receipts (1862-1864) of J.R. Sparkman are signed by M.E. Heriot and Anna G. Heriot.

Lists include certificates of Confederate bonds on hand (1865), Confederate taxes (1864), food goods (corn, peas, and rice) sent to Northampton (1863), board for horses, wines removed from Dirleton (1862-1863), cattle impressed by Col. Cash (1862), hogs purchased (1862), and other accounts. Additional lists contain the names of workers employed, days worked, and wages paid (1927, 1928).
